The worst earphones I've ever purchased July 25, 2010 Robert Moore (Chicago, IL USA) The only earphones that I've ever owned that were worst than these were the ones that came with my iPod.
I had been using some Klipsch Image S2s with my iPod and had been delighted with them. One of the earplugs developed a short, rendering them useless. I bought these Sennheisers because I had had great success with Sennheiser products in the past and thought that these would make good back up earphones if they proved to be unsuccessful as primary ones.
I was shocked and horrified at how awful these were! The sound was muddy and hollow, weak both in the bass range and treble. I will not even use these for back ups.
I know that these are cheap, but these would be a terrible purchase even at a third of the price. If you don't care about sound quality, you won't mind these. If you do care about good sound quality and want something a lot better than what you get with your iPod (these are at least a very tiny step up from those miserable things), don't get these. Just about anything will be better than these. After listening to these for less than five minutes, I ordered a new pair of Klipsch Image S2s.
I probably regret this purchase more than any piece of audio equipment that I've made in my life.
I am responsible to share good thing with other people July 25, 2010 J.W It is the first time I spend time on writing a review~my motivation came from this good item~I used several different headphone before, SONY, Shure, and Ultimate Ear. All of them are more expensive then this one, but the quality~I mean the pleasure I get from its sound, is much bigger than the earphones which are 3 times as expensive as it. I love it! If you can find a deal whose price is around 20, then go for it! It worth the money for sure. Another thing you need to be careful, the size of the ear plug~if you use the in-appropriate one, the sound effect will be weaken by it~so make sure you select the correct size earplug. there are three different sizes of ear plugs go together with the ear phone~so must be one suitable for you~
A truly good product~!
Annoying Design, Terrible Sound Quality July 24, 2010 captainSly I hope this is one of those "helpful reviews." I'm not going to sit here and bash these; I'm going to speak from the last two weeks of experience with these headphones.
I've owned about four or five pairs of various in-ear headphones in the past (heavy user), and I tend to wear them down because I use them during my commute (on the train) and sometimes at work or at home. I use them quite a bit on a daily basis, and they tend to be in my pocket and moving around quite a bit... so yes, they will wear out.
When the jack on my last pair of Ultimate Ears MetroFi 200 headphones finally frayed, I decided to buy these based on:
1. Quite a bit of reviews on Amazon
and
2. The high review rating of 4 stars (at this time of writing)
Wow, now I can see how peoples' judgement of headphones varies WILDLY based on their likes and dislikes.
Myself... I can't stand these headphones. Also, the packaging is one of those "I need a butcher knife and a chainsaw to get these open" styles. No returns here; I'm stuck with them.
Pros:
- Um... decent fit in my ears. I don't have that issue usually.
- 90-degree jack that works well with my Blackberry since the port is on the side. However, this may not appeal to those with an iPod.
- Sound isolation is actually great.
Cons:
- Sound quality is terrible. Tinny, no bass whatsoever. Even the package says "Enhanced Bass." Yeah right. They're painful to listen to after some time... depends on your threshold.
- The cord tangles ALL THE TIME. It's very thin and "springy." Incredibly annoying if you want to keep it in your pocket from time to time, or in a small pouch in, say, your backpack.
- The earbuds themselves are very small and hard to insert into your ear.
- The "cord noise" that you might hear when you're walking and the cord flops around is really annoying.
- If the jack moves around only the slightest bit in the port of your device, you hear static. This was NOT a problem with my listening device (I tried other headphones and there was no fuzz/static sound) or other headphones... only these. Very annoying.
I can't stress enough how bad the sound quality on these headphones is. Tinny, no bass... I'm looking for a little bit of "boom" when it comes to headphones, and I realize that little in-ear headphones can't provide as much as larger, over-the-head ones, but I travel and walk a lot with headphones in, so I don't want to have bulky stuff with me.
Today, I wandered out and got a great deal on some MetroFi 220's at a local store. Stick with what works; that's how I'm going to deal with headphones moving forward.
NOT recommended!!!
Hearing Impaired? Love Podcasts? This is the low-profile headphone to buy July 24, 2010 W. H. Kilpatrick III (Phoenix, AZ) I'm an audiophile and webcaster who now has a moderate hearing impairment. I use headphones of a variety of kinds and price points to listen to TV, internet radio, and music, and I'm constantly hooked up to an ipod. Which is to say, I ask a lot of a pair of headphones, and I'm willing to pay for performance. To my ears, the CX 300 should be rated a 'best buy' for lovers of podcasts and other spoken word audio because it provides the biggest bang for the buck. The 'bang' in this case is just enough bass-like response to provide depth and dimensionality, and just enough treble to promote clarity without generating brittle sound artifacts in the upper register. In the near past, I've used JLab's JBuds J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones, which provide so much treble as to promote sibilence in places you would not suspect it exists; I've also used several different high-end, in-ear headphones from Shure, but whose impressive technical merits apply mostly to music-- not to spoken-word recordings.
The only possible short-coming I can identify for the CX 300 is the light-weight cable, which does not drape as well as heavier cables and is thus more likely to flop around when you are walking and to produce 'cable' noise in your ears as a consequence.
And finally, do note that these headphones use an asymmetric cable (which is shorter on one side than the other): that's great if you keep your ipod in your shirt pocket, but maybe not so great if you keep it in your pants pocket
Potentially Great Headphones... Potential Only Goes So Far Though July 22, 2010 Greg (Indiana, USA) Like everyone else, I wanted to upgrade away from Apple headphones and I wanted some comfortable, great sounding earphones for running.
Before I even gave the CX-300s a listen, I was very annoyed by the design which has the right ear cord 3 times longer than the left. I understand the feature, but I absolutely hate the way it feels hanging along side my face while I'm running. Even when I've tried to adapt by sticking the cord in my shirt collar, the first time I turn to look for a car before crossing the street, it pops out.
The sound quality is above average, not stellar, but good for the price. Bass exists and sounds nice when the buds are deep in your ear. The issue there is, these don't stay firmly in your ear on a 2-3 mile run. They don't fall out (most of the time), but they feel like they might. Even then though, they sound fine.
Here I am a year after purchasing the headphones, which have gained only moderate use over that time and the left earphone has gone defective. There is very minimal sound leaving the speaker and while both ear buds are in, it sounds completely dead. Combine this with my discomfort of their design and I can not recommend the Sennheiser CX-300 earphones.
